Hamza Yousaf, the First Minister of Scotland and leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), has made the decision to resign, which he announced during a press conference in Edinburgh on April 29. Rather than face two upcoming votes of confidence in parliament, Yousaf chose to step down proactively.
The issue of confidence in Yousaf was brought up by members of the Scottish branches of both the Conservative and Labour parties. This followed the government’s rejection of a plan to accelerate the shift to zero greenhouse gas emissions, resulting in the Scottish Green Party leaving the coalition with the SNP. Consequently, the ruling party lost its majority in parliament, holding only 63 out of 129 seats.

At 39 years old, Hamza Yousaf, born in Glasgow to Pakistani immigrant parents, made history as the first Muslim to lead a major UK political party. He also became the first person of Asian descent and the youngest individual to hold the position of First Minister of Scotland. Yousaf assumed leadership of the SNP and the government in March 2023, following Nicola Sturgeon’s unexpected resignation after eight years in office.
