Ring is changing its approach to data sharing with law enforcement, as reported by Bloomberg. Amazon announced that Ring’s home doorbell unit will no longer comply with police requests for footage without a warrant from users’ video doorbells and surveillance cameras. This move has been criticized by privacy advocacy groups, such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Senator Ed Markey even initiated an investigation into the policy in 2022.
In addition, Ring will deactivate its Request For Assistance tool next week, a program that allows law enforcement to request footage from users on a voluntary basis, according to an official blog post.
