Meta is reintroducing facial recognition technology to its platforms after a hiatus of over three years following the discontinuation of Facebook’s “face recognition” system due to widespread criticism. The social network is now set to implement facial recognition tools on Facebook and Instagram for combating scams and assisting users locked out of their accounts, as per the company’s recent announcement.
The initial trial will focus on using facial recognition to identify fraudulent advertisements featuring celebrities and other prominent individuals. Meta elaborated in a blog post that if suspicious ads containing images of at-risk public figures are detected, their faces will be compared with those in the public figure’s Facebook and Instagram profile pictures using facial recognition technology. If a match is confirmed and the ad is deemed fraudulent, it will be blocked.
