Revolutionizing power lines for the modern era with AI and innovative technologies
The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers has created a significant demand for electricity, challenging utilities and grid operators worldwide. However, AI also presents an opportunity to upgrade outdated electricity networks for the digital age and sustainability. According to America’s Department of Energy, implementing AI and other enhancements could potentially unlock 100 gigawatts (GW) of transmission and distribution capacity within the next few years, eliminating the need for new infrastructure. This represents a substantial 13% of the current peak demand of approximately 740GW.
Innovative “grid-enhancing technologies” are now being deployed, thanks to pioneering startups, investors, and utilities embracing innovation. These technologies, known as GETs, encompass both hardware and software upgrades to enhance the efficiency and intelligence of transmission grids.
