Microsoft has introduced a new API to simplify super-resolution coding in PC gaming. DirectSR, developed in collaboration with hardware partners Nvidia, AMD, and Intel, will offer a more efficient pathway for developers to access the companies’ distinct approaches to graphical upscaling in Windows games.
DirectSR enables seamless integration of Super Resolution (SR) for Windows games, addressing the challenges developers face when integrating SR. This provides a smoother, more efficient experience that scales across hardware, as stated by Microsoft program manager Joshua Tucker in a company blog post.
Super-resolution technology enhances the visual quality of games without overburdening the graphics card. By running games internally in a lower resolution and using machine learning and other techniques to upscale the resolution of what appears on the screen, it delivers sharper graphics with minimal strain on the hardware.
