Three Mile Island
Constellation Energy has announced plans to restart a unit at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania to supply power to Microsoft. This move is part of a 20-year agreement aimed at supporting Microsoft’s expansion into artificial intelligence, the company revealed on Friday.
The Baltimore-based energy company intends to revive unit 1 at Three Mile Island, which remained unharmed during the nuclear incident in 1979 but was shut down five years ago due to economic and operational considerations. Constellation Energy will invest $1.6 billion in upgrading the plant’s turbine, generator, power transformer, and cooling systems.
The company aims to have the plant operational by 2028 pending approval from regulatory bodies such as the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and local authorities.
“Nuclear plants are crucial for powering industries vital for our nation’s economic competitiveness like data centers. They provide carbon-free and reliable energy round-the-clock,” stated Joe Dominguez, President, and CEO of Constellation Energy.
Unit 1 is located adjacent to the reactor that was closed following the nuclear disaster. It has a capacity of generating 837 megawatts, sufficient to power over 800,000 average households.
“This partnership marks a significant step in Microsoft’s mission towards achieving carbon negativity by supporting grid decarbonization efforts,” said Bobby Hollis, Vice President of Energy at Microsoft.
