The modder Wesp5 recently released several videos about creating an unofficial patch, and they are full of wonderful little details that further impress what the modding team has accomplished. Much of what they have done involves restoring unused assets found in the game files, including the ”General Lee” model from “The Dukes of Hazzard” which now sits in the museum parking lot, as well as several composer Rick Shaffer compositions that would otherwise have gone unheard.
If the team had to resort to a creative approach, it was usually based on careful research. Even the addition of a shortcut that allows players to bypass the sewer maze, which is one of the weakest parts of Bloodlines, uses maps based on screenshots from the beta version.
The latest video is a perfect example, as it tells the story of creating the “Night in the Library” quest. The longest cut quest restored by the unofficial patch is based on comments from Brian Mitsoda of Troika made in an interview, as well as electronic emails with questions about what he remembers about it. The quest events mostly take place in the Los Angeles Public Library, using unused models and textures found in the game files, as well as completely new objects based on photographs taken by modder Burgermeister, who traveled to Los Angeles to gather reference materials. That’s dedication.
The quest finale takes place in an underground lair created based on an unused alternate version of one of the game’s mausoleums, and another screenshot from the beta. It includes a scene created by modder EntenSchreck that restores some unused animations, and even the villain’s monologue uses a restored voice file that was found freely available.
Presumably, this voice file was a rough draft not intended for dubbing, and its low quality is one of the reasons that sparked controversy over the unofficial patch additions. Nowadays, it is generally accepted that the patch is necessary and an incredible achievement, although you can choose between the “plus” version, which adds more content, and the base version, which only includes bug fixes. (The GOG edition comes with the pre-installed base version, although it is outdated, so you should still download the latest version).
Despite the addition of a couple of slightly incorrect voices in the patch, I recommend this patch specifically if you want to get the maximum enjoyment out of playing Bloodlines today. The latest version can be downloaded for free from our website.
