Anthony Albanese has paid tribute to Pat Dodson’s career in a statement which‌ ends with:

It has been my ⁣great fortune to ⁢be ‌able to count Senator Dodson as a colleague, and ⁤my ‌enduring happiness to be able to count him as a friend.
I ⁢have benefited time and time again from⁤ his wise counsel, and he has taught me so much over the years. Patrick is such a generous man. Through 7⁢ years he ‌has gifted every member of our Caucus ‍his wisdom, his courage, his fearless conviction and his eternal good humour. Through the powerful example of his own life, he has given so many of us the gift of ⁣a greater sense⁣ of perspective. There are few more‌ reassuring ‍sights in Parliament House than seeing Patrick⁤ and his hat coming down a corridor towards you.⁢ When you’re in Pat’s presence ‍you often laugh, you⁤ always learn and you‌ feel yourself stand taller. On behalf of the Labor family he gained when he became a Senator for Western Australia, I wish Pat nothing but the very best as he⁤ focuses on his own ⁤health. He leaves Parliament with our thanks,‍ and with our love.

Patrick Dodson has ⁢resigned as a senator.

His statement has just been released:

This morning I informed the Labor Party‌ parliamentary caucus of my intention to resign as Senator for Western Australia, with effect from 26 January 2024.

I recently informed ⁣the President of the‍ Senate, as well as the Prime Minister⁤ and the ⁣Premier of Western Australia of my decision.
It has been⁣ an honour⁢ to serve⁣ as Senator for Western‌ Australia. I thank Prime Minister ⁢Albanese‍ for his support and for his appointment of me ⁤as Special Envoy for ⁣Reconciliation and Implementation of ‌the Uluru Statement from the⁣ Heart. I also place on the record⁣ my high regard for his decision ‍to proceed with the recent referendum. I also thank Mr ⁣Bill‌ Shorten MP for his decision, when he was Leader of the ⁤Opposition, to nominate me in March 2016 when a casual⁣ Senate vacancy arose. Regrettably,‍ my recent treatment for cancer means that my health, although slowly‌ improving, has left me physically‍ unable to fulfill⁣ satisfactorily my duties as a Senator. I am grateful⁢ for the professional and ⁣kindly ⁤attention‌ of‍ many medical staff over the⁢ past few months, and I wish to thank…
