Final Fantasy 16‘s first DLC, Echoes of the Fallen, introduces a variety of new bosses with different levels of difficulty. This DLC is designed to be played towards the end of the game, just before embarking on the final quest. It is recommended that players level up Clive to near the base game’s level cap of 50 before attempting these bosses. Consequently, these bosses fit well within the overall context of the game. While they are not the most challenging fights in FF16, they still provide a significant challenge.
As always, FF16’s new bosses can be encountered on one of the default difficulty modes, on Final Fantasy Mode after completing the game, or on Ultimaniac Mode after completing it in Final Fantasy Mode. All of these bosses are themed around Fallen technology and revolve around the concept of an artificial Mothercrystal hidden in the Sagespire. Most of them serve as defense systems for the Sagespire. There are four new bosses in FF16: Echoes of the Fallen. Completing the DLC takes approximately three hours, with about a third of that time dedicated to boss fights. Here is a ranking of the new bosses from least to most difficult.
Sigma is the first boss encountered in Echoes of the Fallen. It appears when Clive, Jill, and Joshua pursue the black market crystal merchants into the Sagespire. Sigma serves as the Sagespire’s initial line of defense and manages to scare off the merchants before attacking Clive. Sigma is a mechanized bodyguard with a skull-like face. It has the ability to launch itself across the battlefield, so players should not assume Clive is safe just because he appears to be out of range. However, Sigma’s moveset primarily consists of melee attacks, such as Ballistic Kick and various punch-kick combinations. This means that most of its attacks can be easily countered with Precision Blocks.
Once Sigma’s HP drops below half, it will start using ranged attacks more frequently. These attacks are well-telegraphed and easy to avoid. Apart from learning its attack patterns and landing powerful combos, there are no special tricks to defeating Sigma. Its Will gauge depletes quickly, allowing players to grind it down before unleashing their most powerful Eikonic Strikes to significantly reduce its HP. Since Sigma is often the first boss players encounter in FF16 after a few months away, it can be considered a retraining exercise. Defeating Sigma rewards Clive with the Fallen Enforcer, an excellent sword and a necessary ingredient for crafting the DLC’s ultimate weapon.
Whether Omicron should be classified as a boss is debatable. It is technically a recurring enemy, scored by the normal battle music, and displays its level openly above its HP bar, which is not typical of most FF16 bosses. However, the encounter with Omicron plays out like a boss fight: it is significantly tougher than Sigma and can deal substantial damage if players are not careful. It may be best to consider Omicron as a mini-boss that later reappears as a regular enemy, which is not uncommon in the Final Fantasy series.
