Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Fan Redraws Baxcalibur in the Old-School Art Style
A Pokemon Scarlet and Violet artist created fan art that redrew Baxcalibur in the old-school art style. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet introduced Pokemon variants with paradoxical and converging forms, as they brought back old Pokemon. In addition, Gen 9 brought over 100 new Pokemon to capture and battle.
Among the new Pokemon in Gen 9 is Baxcalibur, the final form of Frigibax that evolves from Arcticbax starting at level 54. Baxcalibur is a Dragon/Ice-type Pokemon, a rare type seen only in Kyurem and its variations. In addition to the rare type combination, Baxcalibur has a possible unusual inspiration and is considered a pseudo-legendary. This term was created by fans to refer to Pokemon with three stages in the evolution line, which are often stronger than non-pseudo-legendary ones. The group of pseudo-legendary Pokemon is mostly made up of Dragon-type Pokemon, except for Metagross.
Pokeillustrator has posted on TikTok a video showing what Baxcalibur would look like if it had been released in 1995. Baxcalibur is a theropod-like Pokemon in navy blue color with short arms and an appearance easily relatable to its inspiration. The Pokemon also wears a type of icy mask, with ice spikes on its snout and chin, and a spine on its back similar to an axe. In the fan art, Baxcalibur takes on a much more dinosaur-like appearance, with a lower stance. The claws of its hands get another color, but overall the Pokemon retains the key colors and elements. The result is fan art that gives one of Gen 9’s best Dragon-type Pokemon a nostalgic design that harkens back to Gen 1.
The video posted by Pokeillustrator has over 260,000 views, with almost 19,000 likes and hundreds of comments. The fan art has received several compliments from TikTok users, commenting on how the illustrator has given Baxcalibur more personality and style by redesigning the Pokemon with an old art style. Previously Baxcalibur received a fan art that also changed its appearance, making the Pokemon more dinosaur-like and more in harmony with Arctibax’s original appearance.
