Overwatch 2 Scraps PvE Hero Mode and Unveils Roadmap for Seasons 5-7

Blizzard, the developer of Overwatch 2, has announced that the originally planned PvE Hero mode content will be cut. However, the game will receive new co-op story missions and other content that was previously planned as part of Hero mode’s features. The announcement was made during a live Twitch stream from the official PlayOverwatch account on May 16, 2023, featuring Overwatch 2 Game Director Aaron Keller and Executive Producer Jared Neuss.

Although the promised PvE Hero mode was a significant factor that made Overwatch 2 stand out from its predecessor, it was announced that the PvE mode wouldn’t release in 2022 alongside the game’s launch. Now, the PvE Hero mode is confirmed to be no longer coming at all, as was promised in 2019. However, pieces of that plan will be incorporated into the content of the game.

The dedicated PvE Hero mode may be scrapped, but many other features that were part of that PvE design will be making their way into the general gameplay of Overwatch 2 instead, as revealed by a new 2023 roadmap. This includes new enemies, story missions, and more.

The upcoming Overwatch 2 roadmap for 2023 includes new co-op story missions as part of the Season 6 content. According to the developers, Season 6 is anticipated to likely be the largest content drop in Overwatch history with a new support hero, story missions, a new player progression system, a large PvE community event, and more.

Although the news of the cancellation of the PvE Hero mode is disappointing to many Overwatch players, the developers should be credited for their honesty in admitting that they simply could not live up to the promises made in 2019 and that they need to shift direction to make Overwatch 2 a better game overall. The upcoming 2023 roadmap shows a considerable amount of content, which hopefully will be enough to make up for this disappointment to Overwatch 2’s community.
