On February 21, 2024, the IM-1 lander “Odysseus” successfully entered lunar orbit, marking a historic achievement for U.S. company Intuitive Machines. The IM-1 mission made history by becoming the first American lunar landing since the Apollo era, with the Nova-C cargo lander “Odysseus” being the first U.S. spacecraft to touch down on the moon’s surface since 1972. This remarkable feat also solidified Intuitive Machines as the first private company to accomplish a moon landing, a task previously carried out only by government agencies.
Steve Altemus, CEO of Intuitive Machines, announced from mission control, “We are on the surface and we are transmitting. Welcome to the moon.” Despite an expected delay in communication, the mission control team worked diligently to confirm the success of the landing.
