Uber, DoorDash, and Grubhub will not be able to avoid paying minimum wage to their New York City delivery workers, as a judge has rejected their attempt to bypass the city’s new law. The law, which is still pending due to the ongoing lawsuit, aims to provide better wage protections for app-based workers. Once the lawsuit is settled, third-party delivery providers will be required to pay delivery workers a minimum wage of approximately $18 per hour before tips, and keep up with yearly increases, according to Reuters.
The amount, which will increase every April 1st, is slightly higher than the city’s standard minimum wage, taking into consideration the additional expenses faced by gig workers. Currently, food delivery workers earn an estimated average of $7-$11 per hour.
