All MGM Resorts hotels and casinos are now operating normally, nine days after a cyberattack caused a shutdown of systems throughout the company, according to an announcement on Wednesday. MGM Rewards accounts will be updated at a later date, and certain promotional offers may still be unavailable. This marks the largest restoration of systems across the company since websites went offline, slot machines stopped working, and some transactions were limited to cash only on September 11.
The ALPHV ransomware group claimed responsibility for the attack shortly after the systems went offline. The group stated that it used social engineering tactics, which involve gaining the trust of employees to obtain information, in order to access the systems. Once access is gained, these groups typically demand a sum of money in exchange for access or information.
