Baldur’s Gate 3 has become the best game of 2023 according to Metacritic, surpassing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
The recently released game by Larian Studios already has many fans, as it has climbed to the top of the Metacritic best games chart with a fantastic rating of 97 points. This becomes even more impressive when you consider that Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom previously held this first place with a rating of 96.
It is important to note that Tears of the Kingdom’s rating is based on 145 critic reviews, while Baldur’s Gate 3 currently only has 14 reviews. This is because many publications have not yet given the role-playing game a final rating. This means that the rating could go either way – it could firmly hold the first place in the list or drop down a bit, but only time will tell.

The developers noted this milestone achievement. Xavier Michael Dauz, Director of Publishing at Larian Studios, shared a screenshot of the game’s Metacritic page with an emoji depicting a bowing person, which speaks for itself. After that, Baldur’s Gate 3 composer Borislav Slavov retweeted (or, to be more accurate now, “reiked”?) Dauz, adding, “Speechless… Happy… Grateful.”
It will be interesting to see if the next major role-playing game, Starfield, can compete in terms of the number of ratings with Baldur’s Gate 3 or Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. If so, it will be the best year for role-playing games in a long time and undoubtedly it will be difficult to determine the game of the year.
