According to The Wall Street Journal, Meta is considering a plan to charge a monthly fee from Instagram and Facebook users in the European Union who wish to access the social media platforms without personalized ads. The proposal, made to European regulators in recent weeks, suggests a fee of up to $14 per month for ad-free Instagram and close to $17 for Facebook.
Meta’s plan is a response to the demands of privacy regulators, who require the company to obtain users’ consent before displaying personalized ads in their feeds. The Wall Street Journal reports that users would have the option to continue accessing Instagram and Facebook for free with ads.
However, regulators are concerned that the proposed prices in Meta’s plan are too high for most users, according to sources familiar with the discussions. A Meta spokesperson informed The Wall Street Journal that the company is exploring options to comply with regulatory requirements. The report did not include immediate comments from Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, which oversees the enforcement of the EU’s privacy law for Meta, or the European Commission.
