During last year’s writers’ strike in Hollywood, the advancement of AI sparked significant concerns among creatives who worried about studios utilizing AI tools to generate scripts or potentially substitute actors. Meta has now revealed a collaboration with horror film production company Blumhouse to test its latest AI video tool called Movie Gen. Although still under development and not yet available for public use until next year, this innovative program has garnered attention.
Meta recently announced its partnership with Blumhouse, renowned for producing popular franchises like “Paranormal Activity”, “The Purge”, and “Insidious”, to enhance and perfect Movie Gen. Oscar-winning actor Casey Affleck, who had early access to the tool, described it as more of a collaborator than just a mere tool in a promotional video.
Jason Blum, founder of Blumhouse, expressed his enthusiasm for testing Movie Gen during its developmental phase. He emphasized the importance of involving the creative industry in refining these powerful tools tailored for directors. Meta also released an engaging three-minute video crafted by filmmaker Aneesh Chaganty that showcased how he transformed his childhood footage using Movie Gen to add aliens or change settings dramatically.
Despite initial skepticism towards AI’s impact on filmmaking, Chaganty acknowledged that tools like Movie Gen could inspire filmmakers to dream bigger creatively. Meta lauded Movie Gen’s capability to produce videos with sound from brief prompts or images as a groundbreaking development, even though it currently supports only 16-second clips.
