Mayo Clinic collaborates with Google to test its medical AI chatbot

According to The Wall Street Journal, Google is currently testing its Med-PaLM 2 AI chat technology at the Mayo Clinic and other hospitals. This technology is based on Google’s PaLM 2 large language model (LLM), which is the foundation of Bard, Google’s ChatGPT competitor. Bard was recently launched at Google I/O.

Med-PaLM-2, unlike the base model, has been specifically trained on questions and answers from medical licensing exams, as well as a curated collection of medical expert demonstrations. This specialized training allows Med-PaLM-2 to excel in answering health-related questions and performing labor-intensive tasks such as document summarization and research data organization.

During Google I/O, the company published a paper that outlined its work on Med-PaLM2. The paper highlighted positive features such as alignment with medical consensus, reasoning ability, and the generation of answers that were preferred by respondents over those generated by physicians. However, it also acknowledged accuracy issues that need to be addressed.
