Mark Cerny, the mastermind behind the innovative PS4 and PS5 consoles, has shared insights on PlayStation’s strategy to bring exclusives to PC, aiming to push the boundaries of the gaming industry. In a recent interview with Games Industry, Cerny highlighted the symbiotic relationship between console technologies and game development, leading to enhanced gaming experiences on both PlayStation and PC platforms.
He expressed his belief that PlayStation’s initiatives are trailblazing for the industry as a whole, ultimately benefiting PC gamers. For instance, the efficient GPU interfaces on the PS4 may have influenced the evolution of DirectX. The launch of the high-performance integrated SSD in the PS5 in 2020 also spurred the PC world to introduce the DirectStorage API for gamers.
Cerny acknowledged the complexities of adapting console games to PC due to their unique characteristics. However, he emphasized that the goal in console design is not to replicate a cheap PC but to deliver a tailored experience on a different platform.
Furthermore, Cerny emphasized his role as a console architect in streamlining the game development process. He noted that the time developers spend on launching games has significantly decreased in recent generations, from six months to a year post-PlayStation 3 to just one to two months in the latest consoles.
