The inquiry into the worsening rental crisis is back on again today, this‌ time it’s sitting in Canberra.

National Association of Renters’⁤ Organisations’ Leo Patterson Ross has been talking ⁢about no-grounds evictions – he says the ACT ⁣is the only jurisdiction that has this ⁣policy.

Currently Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania have similar legislation around evictions, where leases can be ended with no reason after the fixed term.

The ACT has ⁤removed all forms of termination⁢ without a cause, he says:

The ACT [are] the only ones so far.

So in Victoria, 250,000 ‌households a year are under no-grounds evictions because they are susceptible to eviction in the first fixed term. ⁤

And⁣ so anything that might be related to the beginning⁣ of a tenancy,⁤ like asking for ‍a pet is a ⁣really strong example, people aren’t able to enjoy that right.

Because they⁣ could still be asked to leave after their first lease ends, he says.

Queensland only did periodic agreements and Tasmania has had that since 98. So that doesn’t count as ending around the evictions, it’s not the same thing.

He points out Australia will be one of the last countries in the OECD ‍to end no-grounds evictions – aside from the UK and parts of the US.

Most ⁣other countries that kind of a comparable to ours, just‌ have not had and so we can see that the system did not fall apart.

National cabinet has agreed to implement a nationally consistent policy to implement a requirement – though WA flagged it would likely not sign ⁢up.

‘I really feel for⁤ the generation that’s⁢ under 40’, says Victorian housing minister

The Victorian minister ⁤for ⁣housing,⁣ Danny Pearson, has arrived at parliament and asked reporters to “indulge” him for a moment to discuss the government’s housing statement, which will be released next month.

Growing up in Wantirna⁣ in the 70s and 80s, Pearson said the deal back then ⁤was if you‍ worked and‍ lived “a reasonably‌ abstemious lifestyle” you would⁤ have a house at the end of the day:

I really feel for the generation that’s under 40. I think that has been absolutely been damaged and I think that there’s ⁣an ‌opportunity for us to really look at ‌getting the settings⁤ right to‌ make sure⁤ that younger Victorians have that opportunity.

Pearson ‌says ‌“nations fail” when political and ‍economic institutions become “exclusive”.

We’ve got younger Victorians, [who are] hardworking, ⁣who have done ‍everything right … and there’s not an opportunity for them to get a⁤ house. At the risk of sounding…
