The Ministry of Agriculture in Lithuania is ramping up inspections on vegetable imports to prevent illegal shipments from Russia, as reported by LRT.
Local agricultural companies have raised concerns about the illegal entry of Russian tomatoes and cucumbers into Lithuania through Belarus and Poland using falsified documents.
To address this issue, the ministry is planning to implement stricter safety checks on these products to ensure consumer protection. An Austrian laboratory will conduct these checks and determine the vegetables’ country of origin.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Vitenis Tomkus, emphasized the need for EU-wide measures to prevent Russian product imports, as tracking their origin becomes challenging once they enter EU markets.
In a joint effort with Latvia, Estonia, Poland, and the Czech Republic, Lithuania has urged the European Commission to consider restrictions on food products originating from Russia and Belarus.
