Lithuania Cracks Down on EU Vegetable Imports to Weed Out Illegal Russian Tomatoes and Cucumbers

The Ministry of Agriculture in Lithuania is⁢ ramping up inspections on vegetable imports to prevent‍ illegal shipments from Russia, as reported by‍ LRT.

Local agricultural companies have raised concerns⁤ about the illegal entry of Russian tomatoes and cucumbers into⁢ Lithuania through Belarus and Poland using‌ falsified documents.

To address ⁤this issue, the ministry‌ is ⁢planning to implement stricter safety checks on these⁣ products to ensure ⁢consumer protection. An Austrian laboratory will ⁢conduct these checks and determine the vegetables’ country of origin.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Vitenis Tomkus, emphasized the need ‌for EU-wide measures to prevent Russian product imports, as tracking their‍ origin ⁢becomes challenging once‌ they enter EU markets.

In a⁢ joint effort with Latvia, Estonia, Poland,‍ and the Czech Republic, Lithuania‍ has urged the European Commission to consider ⁢restrictions on food products originating from Russia and Belarus.
