LEGO 2K Drive Sparks Discussion Among Developers About Potential Meme Creation

LEGO 2K Drive is not just another racing game, it is an open-world driving adventure that offers much more. The upcoming title is a result of the recent partnership between LEGO and 2K, with Visual Concepts developing the game. Along with the main campaign, which follows players as they try to become the best racer in Bricklandia, the map is filled with minigames, side quests, and Easter eggs to discover.

Unlike most LEGO games, 2K Drive is not based on any existing IP. Instead, it features a completely original storyline that maintains the brand’s signature style of humor. The world of Bricklandia is also a new creation, with four distinctly-themed biomes, such as the desert-themed Big Butte and spooky Hauntsborough. Players can enjoy everything LEGO 2K Drive has to offer both solo and with friends, or opt to spend their time in the Garage where they can build any kind of vehicle imaginable from the ground up using a large library of LEGO blocks.

Screen Rant recently interviewed Design Director David Msika and Lead World Designer Jon Dunsmoor to discuss creating an original IP, building distinct biomes, and what players can expect from LEGO 2K Drive.

Screen Rant: With most LEGO games, you have a baseline IP that you’re basing it off of, but you guys were starting entirely from scratch. Did that make developing the world a challenge, or do you think it was better for you guys in the long run to have complete freedom to explore ideas?

In the main campaign, there’s obviously a lot just related to that to find on the map, but there’s so many other things like little mini games and side quests that are very off-the-wall and unique. One that really stood out to me is having to bring a giant egg across the desert into a pan. I’m curious what the design process was like coming up with all of those starkly different ideas dotted across the map that are meant to keep the game feeling fresh.
