A dispute has arisen between Kuwait and Lebanon after Lebanon’s caretaker Economy Minister Amin Salam made comments about rebuilding a section of Beirut’s port.
Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah criticized Salam’s remarks, which were made on Wednesday. Salam had urged Kuwait to rebuild Lebanon’s main wheat silos, suggesting that the decision could be made easily.
The silos were originally constructed in 1969 with funding from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, but they were destroyed during the Beirut port explosion in 2020.
Al-Sabah stated that Salam’s comments were not in line with the usual political decision-making process and called on him to retract them in order to protect the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
Salam, in response, clarified that he did not intend to offend anyone with his comments and that he was simply referring to the speed at which a decision could be made, as reported by Lebanese media.
