Latvia Deploys Soldiers to Enhance Border Security with Belarus

Latvia’s defence minister ‍has instructed ​the⁤ army to ⁣assist in safeguarding the country’s border with Belarus amidst the presence of “hybrid threats” and a reported 96 attempts ⁤to cross the border ⁢within a 24-hour period.

On⁢ Tuesday, ​Latvian Border Guard officers were called back⁢ from their⁤ vacations⁤ to aid in patrols, as⁢ stated by officials.

Latvia ⁣possesses “information about a potential rise in hybrid ​threats,” as stated by the Border Guard ​in a statement on Tuesday, highlighting the ‌increasing involvement of⁤ Belarusian authorities​ in‌ organizing the movement of individuals, including asylum seekers and ⁢refugees, across Latvia’s borders.

As a result of ‌these threats, the Border Guard‌ has implemented a holiday ban. Additionally, they have requested support from the Latvian Armed Forces and police. ⁤In response, Latvian ⁣Defence Minister Inara Murniece has ordered the deployment of ‌additional forces to the border, according to reports.
