During the Game Developers Conference (GDC) today, Sven Vincke, the founder of Larian Studios, dropped a bombshell by stating that the company has no intention of releasing any expansions or DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3 or Baldur’s Gate 4.
Instead, Vincke revealed that Larian is moving away from Dungeons & Dragons and focusing on creating something entirely new, leaving the intellectual property in the hands of publisher Wizards of the Coast. No specific plans for the future were disclosed by the studio head.
This announcement comes as a major surprise, especially considering the immense success of Baldur’s Gate 3. Many fans had been anticipating DLC or expansions, especially after Larian released several significant free patches, including a playable epilogue party.
While Larian had previously hinted at the possibility of creating DLC, it seems that their next project may be another game set in the Divinity universe. In an interview before the release of Baldur’s Gate 3, Vincke mentioned that a follow-up to Divinity: Original Sin is “definitely” on the horizon, but the team needs to complete Baldur’s Gate 3 first.
“For a while we’ll continue working on fixes, then we’ll take a break and decide what to do next,” Butler said at the time. “But right now we’re definitely having discussions. We want to do more. We just don’t know what.”
