Why Kristi Noem Failed to Secure the Vice-Presidential Position
The tradition of campaign memoirs in America typically includes a striking headshot, a title that sounds profound but lacks substance, and a narrative that is self-congratulatory yet forgettable. Kristi Noem, the charismatic Republican governor of South Dakota who seemed to be positioning herself as Donald Trump’s running mate, has added her own entry to this genre. While her photo is impeccably staged and her title (“No Going Back”) is appropriately vacuous, the content of her memoir is unfortunately unforgettable for all the wrong reasons.
One particularly unsettling anecdote in the book involves Ms. Noem recounting the shooting of her own dog, Cricket. This 14-month-old wirehair pointer had disrupted a pheasant hunt planned for guests at her lodge, attacked chickens, and even tried to bite Ms. Noem. The governor admits to despising the dog and ultimately choosing to euthanize her by shooting her in a gravel pit.
