Aleksei A. Navalny, the imprisoned Russian opposition leader, has claimed that Russian authorities have brought new and “absurd” terrorism charges against him, which could result in a life sentence. His comments were posted on his team’s Twitter account as he appeared via video link at a court hearing for separate extremism charges that are widely believed to be politically motivated.
Navalny, who began as an anti-corruption activist before becoming one of the Kremlin’s most vocal critics, is already serving time in a penal colony for fraud and contempt of court. Since returning to Russia after recovering from a poisoning attempt in Germany that the West has blamed on the Kremlin, he has faced repeated charges from Russian authorities.
In comments relayed from the courtroom by his supporters on social media, Navalny stated that an investigator had informed him on Tuesday that a terrorism case had been initiated against him, which could result in a life sentence.
