As Link explores Hyrule, he’ll stumble across no shortage of Koroks in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, who will demand both his time and his brain power – but one odd, secret mechanic can lessen his workload. The forest creatures hide themselves in clever ways, requiring that the protagonist complete a special task in exchange for a Korok seed. Although the jobs are short and simple enough, they can quickly become tiresome thanks to their sheer quantity. Fortunately, one player has discovered an odd, surprisingly simple way to save time and bypass a particular type of Korok seed puzzle in TOTK.
While some are fond of the small, tree-like beings and enjoy meeting them out in the wild, others aren’t quite as courteous. Much like in the prequel Breath of the Wild, a number of players have taken to horribly mistreating Koroks in Tears of the Kingdom, making use of Link’s new Ultrahand abilities to send them flying into chasms, roasting over open fire pits, frying in electrocution machines, and more. Regardless of Link’s disposition towards Koroks, though, all players can take advantage of a small time-saving exploit in Tears of the Kingdom.
In a video posted to Twitter by aquatic_ambi, Link comes across a Korok hiding in an incomplete formation of rocks, which would normally require him to search for and replace a missing boulder. However, aquatic_ambi has a different idea, and they instead slam the ground with a Boulder Sledge, making sure to land the end of the weapon on the vacant spot in question. Amazingly, doing so triggers the Korok to appear and offer the protagonist a Korok seed, as if he had completed the puzzle as intended.
Sadly, the Korok seed puzzle trick in TOTK has its limitations. It’s specific to rock formation-based puzzles, and as aquatic_ambi demonstrates in a Twitter reply to PokeBlu, using Autobuild to summon a rock doesn’t do the trick. But in a land full of riddles to solve and Koroks to collect, the exploit is still worthwhile for those who want to get in and out as quickly as possible. Such players will benefit from keeping a rock-Fused weapon on hand, as they’re not only one of the most useful Fuses in Tears of the Kingdom, but they’re also the secret to bypassing the otherwise somewhat annoying Korok puzzles.
At the end of the day, finding every Korok seed is still a major commitment that will undoubtedly take dozens of hours. Coaxing each of the forest spirits out of hiding – let alone locating them in the first place – is an idea that many will understandably find unappealing, especially knowing the nature of Hestu’s final reward in Tears of the Kingdom. While the Korok seed puzzle trick may not atone for everything, it can at least provide players with a breath of fresh air through its amusingly simple solution.
