Amazon has made the tough decision to discontinue Kindle Vella, with plans to shut it down completely by February 2025. Launched in 2021, Vella was introduced as a platform for readers to explore new fictional stories and for authors to earn through Kindle Direct Publishing. Unfortunately, it did not gain the traction Amazon had hoped for, leading to its closure after three years of operation.
Authors have until December 4th to publish stories on Vella, which is also the final day for readers to purchase tokens. While token purchases will cease after this date, existing tokens can still be used to unlock episodes until the program ends in February. Fortunately, readers who have unlocked episodes prior to the shutdown will retain access even after Vella closes its doors.
