Former US President Donald Trump may face a ban from the real estate industry in New York, which could have a devastating impact on his real estate empire that brought him fame long before his presidency.
Trump is accused of obtaining loans with false financial statements over several years. After a lengthy trial lasting more than three months, a Manhattan court is expected to announce its decision this week.
The New York fraud case is just one of several legal battles Trump is facing as he moves closer to securing the Republican presidential nomination following his recent victories in the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary.
Here’s what we know about this civil case and its potential impact on Trump’s presidential campaign:
New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a civil lawsuit against the former president, The Trump Organization, and top officials at the business on September 21, 2023, following a three-year inquiry into Trump’s business dealings.
In the lawsuit, James accused Trump and The Trump Organization officials, including his children Ivanka, Eric, and Donald Jr, of intentionally creating over 200 inflated financial evaluations between 2011 and 2021 to secure favorable loans totaling $250 million from banks and insurance companies.
