Star Wars Outlaws appears to be one of the few Star Wars games to not rely on the traditional trope of Jedi and Sith battling over the galaxy, but instead focuses on a woman who is just trying to create her own life amid the interstellar wars. Players will take control of the character Kay Vess as she attempts to make a memorable heist without getting caught. Set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, there is a lot that developers could do using their new protagonist to give fans a glimpse at another side of the story during this pivotal time period.
The concept of not using a Jedi for the main character of a Star Wars game is not new, but with well over 100 games that take place in the Star Wars franchise, most of them do focus on the traditional concept of the Jedi at their core. This open-world game will allow for another perspective on the events unfolding in the galaxy and provides a fun plot point for players to explore. If the focus of Star Wars Outlaws is truly on heists and outwitting the enemy rather than the Jedi force powers and intergalactic politics, it promises to be a distinctive adventure amid a familiar franchise.
Kay Vess appears to be much more Han Solo than Luke Skywalker in terms of typical Star Wars protagonists. As the main character in Star Wars Outlaws, she is a scoundrel with no apparent connection to the Force who, along with her adorable companion Nix, sees an opportunity to take advantage of the turmoil going on and seeks to find her own life in the universe. In the trailers shown so far, it appears that she primarily uses stealth to her advantage and some physical combat when needed, but none of the stereotypical lightsabers and Force powers that are common in Star Wars games are present.
Star Wars Outlaws is labeled as an open-world action-adventure narrative game that is set within the landscape of the Star Wars series. It’s billed as the first truly open-world Star Wars title and trailers that have been shown so far at the June 2023 Xbox Showcase and Ubisoft Forward events gave fans a glimpse into what they can expect the gameplay of Outlaws to be like. Staying true to its theme of a heist game, Outlaws shows many instances of Kay being sneaky as she makes her way through dangerous situations and has to come up with clever ideas to outsmart the enemies in her path.
From what has been revealed so far, the world and narrative of Star Wars Outlaws appear to prop up a richly detailed, story-driven game that introduces a new protagonist into the world of Star Wars. By not relying on the standard concept of Jedi powers and lightsabers, the game can give fans a look at different aspects of the galaxy that hasn’t been delved into quite as much. Star Wars Outlaws still has a long way to go before it is released, but so far it appears to put a fun and unique spin on the Star Wars franchise.
