The European Commission (EC) has requested more information from Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, to evaluate its compliance with privacy and security laws in the European Union (EU). The EC has set deadlines for Meta to provide information on election information, terrorism, and the protection of minors. Meta is also required to provide details about its pay-to-opt-out-of-tracking program. Failure to comply could result in hefty fines. The Digital Services Act, which governs how internet companies manage user data, was approved in April 2022. The latest request for information comes after consumer protection watchdog groups filed complaints against Meta for its data collection and processing policies.
