The key factor behind this is performance. When asked about why old stories may seem “blurry” in highlights, Mosseri explained that Instagram aims to display the highest-quality videos possible. However, if a video isn’t being watched for an extended period of time - as most views occur shortly after posting – Instagram will switch to a lower quality version.
