A new leak suggests that Pokémon Home is about to introduce a new feature that will greatly enhance its functionality. Pokémon Home is a cloud-based service that allows players to store and transfer Pokémon from various Pokémon games. However, there are some limitations with compatibility that prevent some transfers from being possible. The new feature will open up compatible Pokémon games to many new opportunities for players.
Pokémon Home builds upon the Pokémon franchise’s standard in-game PC storage system by extending it into the cloud, allowing for a more extensive collection of Pokémon to be maintained. Its transfer capabilities mean that players need not risk any beloved Pokémon when starting a new game. The service does have its limitations, though. For example, Home is never compatible with new Pokémon games at launch. Similarly, although Pokémon can be transferred forwards to newer games, the same cannot be said of the reverse.
The Time Capsule was an interesting inclusion in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. It allowed for a degree of cross-compatibility that is not seen in today’s Pokémon games. However, the Time Capsule was not without its problems. Generation 1 games had no way of supporting the new Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver, and as such these Pokémon were blocked from the Time Capsule. Pokémon with moves new to Gen 2 were similarly untradable, although it was possible to otherwise trade Pokémon with a move set that was impossible in Gen 1.
Much like the original Time Capsule, this new transfer feature will reportedly have restrictions on which Pokémon will be compatible with the service. Pokémon originating in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet like the much-loved Lechonk or the Paldean starter trio will not be transferable to games from previous Generations. However, as only 108 of the 478 Pokémon in the Paldean Pokédex are actually new to the franchise, this still leaves plenty of Pokémon which can soon be transferred back to older games.
Similarly, a Pokémon’s move set can also change when transferred via Pokémon Home. This means that a Pokémon’s move set will essentially be reset when transferred into Scarlet and Violet from Pokémon Home, much like move sets can change when transferring Pokémon between other games from prior Generations.
