Like Genshin Impact before it, Honkai Star Rail will become part of the PlayStation 5 library in the near future. Developer HoYoverse announced a technical test during Gamescom 2023’s Opening Night Live, and it’s meant to arrive within the year. While on the floor at Gamescom 2023, we got a chance to go hands-on with the Honkai Star Rail PS5 build and sample what the transition from PC/mobile to PS5 was like for the mega-popular RPG.
The most important takeaway is that, yes, Honkai Star Rail is just as excellent on PlayStation 5 as its other platforms. There was nothing during testing that felt out of place or worse than previous experiences on mobile or PC. Load times were quick nearly every instance, and when they weren’t, it was only noticeable because they weren’t close to instant - still well within range for some PC experiences (and most mobile ones). Character interactions and cutscenes look predictably great on PS5, though they haven’t been upscaled in a way that makes them largely different from what’s been seen before.
Honkai Star Rail’s PS5 UI is also easy to interact with. The quick wheel used to access dailies, team comps, and more is a natural fit on a controller. So, too, are the character skills and abilities, which are one-button presses that are a welcome break from the frequent tapping on the screen that can sometimes characterize some grinding sessions on Honkai Star Rail with a mobile device. Navigating these different events and progression areas was just as easy as it is on HSR’s other platforms.
With a launch on PS5, it feels like Honkai Star Rail has all its platforms covered. While a game like Genshin Impact would still really benefit from a Nintendo Switch release, Honkai Star Rail’s turn-based nature makes its mobile performance and mechanical interactions nearly identical to its PC counterpart. As a highly mobile game, Honkai Star Rail really only needed a more sedentary setting for those who wanted the benefit of a big television screen or higher performance without needing a decent PC. By all accounts, that’s what people seem to be getting with Honkai Star Rail on PS5.
It’s a solid fit for a mobile-friendly title that doesn’t lose any of its charm or appeal with a change of scenery. HoYoverse continues to deliver an incredible multi-platform experience for its games library, and Honkai Star Rail is primed to reach a new audience of console players when it releases. Those who have played on PC may genuinely want to give it a try too – it’s a convenient setup with strong UI and button-mapping that makes the change barely noticeable at all.
