A statement of concern was issued on Friday by a senior official from the International Committee of the Red Cross regarding the deteriorating health conditions and inadequate preparations for aging prisoners at Guantánamo Bay. Patrick Hamilton, the head of the Red Cross delegation for the United States and Canada, stated that the U.S. military must improve the care provided to prisoners who are “experiencing the symptoms of accelerated aging, worsened by the cumulative effects of their experiences and years spent in detention.” During a routine quarterly visit to the detention facility in March, Mr. Hamilton and other delegates noted that the detainees’ “physical and mental health needs are growing and becoming increasingly challenging.” He also emphasized the need to adapt the infrastructure for the detainees’ evolving needs and disabilities.
