World Court Delivers Landmark Decision on Israel’s Occupation
The International Court of Justice has made a significant statement regarding Israel’s presence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as well as its settlements, urging for an immediate end to Israel’s activities in those areas. Although not legally binding, the advisory opinion holds considerable legal significance.
With an 11-4 vote, the court declares that Israel’s ongoing presence in the occupied territory is illegal. By a vote of 14-1, the court states that Israel must halt all new settlement activities and remove all settlers from the occupied Palestinian territory. The court concludes that Israel’s policies and actions, such as expanding settlements, building infrastructure, exploiting resources, declaring Jerusalem as its capital, and applying Israeli law extensively in the West Bank, solidify its control over the occupied Palestinian territory. These actions are intended to be permanent and have irreversible consequences on the ground. Therefore, the court views these policies as a form of annexation of significant portions of the occupied Palestinian territory.
