Recently, Ubisoft made the decision to shut down the official servers of The Crew, a multiplayer racing game that had been around for over a decade. This move, despite the game’s lukewarm reception, caused quite a stir among players. Many users who lost access to the game were outraged and demanded refunds for their purchases. Some even took their grievances to the government of the United Kingdom.
Players launched a petition on the UK government’s official platform, calling for legislation to prevent game publishers from discontinuing games and proposing penalties for such actions. The petition has already gathered over 4,000 verified signatures since it was initiated.
The petition, hosted on the UK Parliament website, advocates for:
Requiring publishers to ensure that games and related in-game content remain playable for consumers even after the end of official support, without the need for additional intervention to keep the game running, as a consumer’s rightful entitlement.
To prompt a response from the government, the petition must reach 10,000 signatures, and with 100,000 signatures, it can be debated in the UK Parliament.
