The French government announced on Sunday that hundreds more individuals had been arrested during a fifth night of rioting triggered by the police killing of a 17-year-old. In response, police have deployed additional forces to cities across the country that have become flashpoints for the unrest.
Protesters, many of whom are minors, have set cars on fire, caused damage to infrastructure, and clashed with law enforcement officers in a display of anger following the shooting of Nahel M. The incident occurred when an officer shot Nahel at close range as he attempted to flee a traffic stop on Tuesday.
The killing was captured on video, which quickly spread on social media and intensified the outrage over police violence against minority groups. This incident has exposed deep racial tensions within France.
A day after Nahel’s funeral in his hometown near Paris, the interior ministry reported that police had made 719 arrests overnight, although this number is still provisional, following approximately 1,300 arrests the previous night.
According to the ministry, 45 police officers or gendarmes were injured, 577 vehicles were set on fire, 74 buildings were ignited, and 871 fires were started in streets and other public areas.
