The court in Bashkortostan has extended the prison sentence for Lilia Chanyshova, the former head of Navalny’s headquarters in Ufa, from seven and a half to nine and a half years. The prosecutor pushed for a 10-year sentence, citing the significant impact of her actions.
Back in November 2023, the Supreme Court of Bashkiria upheld the verdict and added two aggravating factors to the case.
Chanyshova was taken into custody in Ufa in November 2021. By June 2023, she was convicted of establishing an extremist group, encouraging extremism, and forming an organization that infringed on citizens’ rights. However, she was only charged under the extremist group article. The other charges were dropped due to the statute of limitations. During her closing statement, Chanyshova claimed she was being persecuted for her lawful political activities. The prosecutor sought a 12-year sentence.
One witness in Chanyshova’s trial alleged that she was abducted by law enforcement and pressured to cooperate, with offers of money and threats of legal action.
