US presidential candidate Ron DeSantis engaged in a heated debate with California’s Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday night, as he made a final appeal to Republican voters, positioning himself as the best choice to challenge President Joe Biden in the upcoming election.
DeSantis is currently trailing far behind former US President Donald Trump in the polls for the Republican Party’s nomination in 2024.
“There’s one thing … that we have in common,” Newsom told DeSantis. “Neither of us will be the nominee for our party in 2024.”
The event, titled “The Great Red vs. Blue State Debate,” was hosted by Sean Hannity on Fox News Channel.
Here are five key takeaways from the debate:
Newsom, the 56-year-old term-limited Democrat governor of California, has positioned himself as a potential future presidential candidate. However, he has chosen not to challenge Biden for the Democratic nomination in 2024. Instead, he has become a prominent defender of Biden and a formal campaign adviser.
