The Digital Markets Act (DMA) has been expanded by the European Union to include the iPad, effective as of March 6, 2024. Apple now has a six-month period to ensure that its tablets meet all EU legal requirements. Margrethe Vestager, the European Commissioner for Competition and the Digital Economy, emphasized that this decision will promote fairness and competition within the EU.
One key aspect of the new EU law is that Apple will be obligated to allow third-party app stores on their tablets and facilitate the removal of pre-installed apps.
In March 2024, the European Commission announced investigations into potential violations of the Digital Markets Act by Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, and Meta.
