Federal Antimonopoly Service’s Ruling: Apple Must Open iPadOS to Third-Party App Stores

The Digital Markets Act (DMA) has been expanded by ⁣the European ⁣Union to include the iPad, effective⁤ as of March 6, 2024. ‍Apple now has a six-month period to ensure that its tablets meet all EU legal requirements. Margrethe Vestager, the⁤ European Commissioner for Competition and the Digital Economy, emphasized that this decision will promote ⁢fairness and competition within the EU.

One key aspect of the new EU⁣ law is that Apple will be obligated to allow third-party app stores on their tablets and facilitate the removal of pre-installed apps.

In‌ March 2024, the European Commission announced investigations into potential violations‌ of the Digital Markets Act by Alphabet, Amazon,⁣ Apple, and Meta.
