The FBI has successfully disrupted a sophisticated Chinese-backed hacking operation that targeted over 260,000 personal devices globally. This operation, led by the group known as “Flax Typhoon,” infected devices like routers and cameras with malware, creating a vast botnet network.
Primarily targeting government agencies and critical organizations in various regions, Flax Typhoon’s activities were brought to light when a California company reported a cyber intrusion in 2023. With the help of IP addresses linked to Chinese servers, the FBI was able to trace back the origins of this malicious scheme.
FBI Director Christopher Wray highlighted the success of removing malware from thousands of infected devices during the Aspen Cyber Security Summit. The coordinated efforts also involved cyber security officials from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK in identifying Flax Typhoon as responsible for these attacks.
Despite these revelations, the Chinese Embassy in Washington denied any involvement and criticized the U.S. for baseless accusations against China. This incident underscores ongoing global cybersecurity threats posed by sophisticated hacking groups like Flax Typhoon.
