An explosion has occurred at a firework warehouse in southern Thailand, resulting in the deaths of at least nine individuals and causing injuries to over 100 others, according to officials.
The incident took place in Sungai Kolok, a town located in the Narathiwat province, and is believed to have been caused by welding activities during the construction of the building, as stated by the provincial governor.
“This afternoon, a warehouse storing firecrackers in Sungai Kolok exploded, resulting in nine fatalities and 115 injuries,” said Narathiwat Governor Sanan Pongaksorn in a statement to the AFP news agency. “The fire is now under control. Initial investigations suggest that a technical error occurred during the steel welding process, as the building is still being constructed.”
The Public Relations Department of Narathiwat province reported that at least 118 individuals were injured, and over 200 households were affected. They also mentioned that there may still be individuals trapped under the debris. The blast caused damage within a radius of approximately 500 meters (1,640 feet).
Videos shared on social media depict a large plume of smoke engulfing the area, along with numerous structures, vehicles, and motorcycles that have been damaged. Debris can be seen scattered across the streets, and many houses and buildings have collapsed roofs and walls.
