The highly anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is set to be released on February 29, 2024, which is Leap Day. This game is the sequel to the 2020 Final Fantasy 7 Remake and is part of a trilogy that aims to reinvent the original FF7, a game that was originally released in 1997. Square Enix, the developer and publisher, is not only modernizing the classic RPG, but also subverting the typical remake expectations by altering the original events and creating parallel narratives.
While Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a PlayStation 5 exclusive, it expands on the scope of the previous game, taking players from Midgar into the vast wilds of Gaia. The game features customizable party formations, new playable characters, and a collectible card game called Queen’s Blood. The map is not contiguous, but it offers sprawling zones that provide a significant breadth compared to the linearity of Midgar in Remake.
Screen Rant had the opportunity to speak with the director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Naoki Hamaguchi, and translator Hinano Akiyama about the game’s development for the PS5, the introduction of new playable characters, and the modernization of the original FF7’s mini-games.
One of the questions asked was about the impact of developing Rebirth exclusively for the PlayStation 5 on the game’s design. Another question addressed the change from a compass to a minimap and its necessity in the new game world.
