The survival horror game Alone in the Dark, featuring David Harbour and Jodie Comer, has announced a free demo for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC fans, available now. The game is a “reimagination” of the ’90s horror hit and is set to release in October.
The Alone in the Dark development team announced on the PlayStation Blog and social media that PlayStation players can download a free demo of the game, known as the Alone in the Dark Prologue, starting May 25. The demo takes place before the events of the main game and centers on Grace Saunders, who is tasked with delivering a letter to Emily Hartwood, played by Jodie Comer. The Prologue should give fans a taste of the iconic manor, reimagined for current-gen platforms, and “the forces preying on its residents’ sanity.”
Grace Saunders appears in both 1993’s Alone in the Dark 2 and Jack in the Dark, and her role in the upcoming series revival should set up Emily Hartwood’s story. In delivering the letter from the Prologue, Saunders invites Jodie Comer’s Hartwood to Deceto where nightmarish horror should be quick to follow. The game will have dual protagonists in Hartwood and Detective Edward Carnby, played by David Harbour, meaning fans will have to decide whether they want to play as Harbour’s character or Comer’s.
This is the first video game role for both Comer and Harbour, who are best known for their appearances in shows like Killing Eve and Stranger Things, respectively. While both stars have appeared in movies and TV fairly regularly over the last few years, Alone in the Dark marks their first official venture into gaming. Both Comer and Harbour’s in-game characters make the most of cutting-edge gaming tech, with each appearing as perfect replicas of their real-life selves.
Alone in the Dark is set to release on October 25, 2023, for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. While the free Prologue demo should give players a taste of the full game, there should still be plenty of terrifying surprises in store when the full release comes later this year. Fans have plenty of time to decide whether they’ll be playing as Detective Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood.
