Meta is significantly expanding Messenger’s encryption feature, rolling it out to “millions more people’s chats” starting today, the company announced. The end-to-end encryption (E2EE) standard, which was introduced a year ago, will be available to all users by the end of 2023. Meta also explained the complexity of the transition, referring to it as “an incredibly complex and challenging engineering puzzle.”
The system ensures that conversations are safe from eavesdropping and interception through the use of public key cryptography. This means that even law enforcement cannot access the conversations. Additionally, message history will also be encrypted. Initially, Meta focused on implementing E2EE in WhatsApp, which now offers full encryption. By the end of this year, Messenger will have the same level of protection.
