Google is rumored to be developing a new Android API called Rich Ongoing Notifications, which will enable apps to show quick information in the status bar similar to Apple’s Live Activities on the iPhone. This discovery was made by journalist Mishaal Rahman in the Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3 release. The feature could function like a time tracker that appears during phone calls, displaying text in a bubble at the top of the screen that users can tap for more details.
In an article for Android Authority, Rahman explains that this API will allow apps to create customizable chips with text and background colors that reside in the status bar. This could be particularly beneficial for updates on public transportation, enabling users to stay informed about departure times or an Uber’s estimated arrival time while using other apps. Although this feature is still under development and may take some time before it becomes available.
